Anthony, could you attach your xorg.conf file (located in /etc/X11/)?  Even
though it sounds like this is either a problem with your monitor or with the
power-saving feature it might be affected by the video card driver you are
using.  Are you sure your video card is being correctly detected?  You might
need to download the proprietary drivers from ATI or Nvidia if you are using
one of the open source drivers.  I think that some monitors have options for
power-saving in the built-in OSD - you might want to check it.  I'm no
expert, but I am certainly glad to help.
