ARCHIVES don't search well [was:File Dialogs don't let me see the root tree]

I was still running dapper when I vaguely remember seeing a thread
concerning something hidden under /var/run....

I tried to search the archive at:
http://archives.free.net.ph/list/kubuntu-users.en.html
But since I didn't know exactly when it was posted, or what the official
keywords were I couldn't find anything relevant with search keys

ml:kubuntu-users /var/run
ml:kubuntu-users /var/run hidden
ml:kubuntu-users /var/run .hidden

It was only by chance that I eventually tripped over the thread about file 
dialogs... (actually I expanded it by mistake and fortunately noticed the 
context I'd been looking for, not to mention a possible fix...)

Am I using the right archive? Or am I doomed to beat many a dead horse 
because of the way the archive is structured [and/or the way my brain
isn't so structured perhaps <grin>] ?????????? I don't remember having
such problems searching my favorite alternative archives at
http://marc.info when I used to run fedora, but unfortunately they don't
seam to carry kubuntu <sigh>...
