Problems with mounting disks & usb flash

Check permissions, where?  /dev?

The USB scanner is showing up as brother:bus02;dev1  What file would I check
for that as well? Not to mention the disk mounting.

What groups would the user need to be a member of besides "disk" or
"scanner"?
