Sorry to the list for replying to the same email twice, but I am 
wondering, given the above, what the output of your modified:

apt-get install ubuntu-base linux-k7 ubuntu-desktop dm*raid* grub

command was.  Did everything actually get installed?  If not, the errors from the output of that command might help in figuring this out.
