You know what's really weird?  The problem kinda just went away, and I have
no idea why.  I typed (from the chroot'ed shell) "apt-get install dmraid"
and it magically worked...even though I'd tried that many times before with
the results previous posted in this thread.

I'm beginning to wonder if it was messed up in the repository and over the
hours I was trying to work this out, it got fixed (don't laugh, that
actually happens in the Fedora world sometimes).

I feel really bad about not actually knowing the solution to the problem. 
I'm almost tempted to try the install from scratch again so I can see if it
happens again.
