display with Kubuntu live CD

Well, can you access the System settings, and get to the Screen module? There, 
in the tab Size & Orientation, you can (hopefully) change the screen 
settings.

Then, in case you can change, you can reach the Apply button by moving the 
window up with the mouse: Just hold Alt key and click on an empty space 
anywhere in the window, and drag it up.

If that does not work, you have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. 

Just run 

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

to lauch a simple console-based editor.

You will also need to know exactly, what screen resolutions and refresh rate 
your monitor suppors. You may also have to change the graphic card 
properties.

below you will find my file's section "Screen" that you need to edit. 

Alternatively, you can use command 
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

to lauch the x server configuration program, and enter the right parameters 
for your monitor and graphic card.
