It would appear that on Wed Feb 1, art.alexion did say:

Actually I did try killall as a normal user. (the same user who ran
startx and who started kscd and who ksysguard listed for the kscd
process) I still think it should have worked just as looking up the pid
with ps -A and doing a kill -15, and then in frustration a kill -9
should have...

But when those failed I did the <ctrl>+<esc> hotkey for the "KDE System
Gaurd" aka:ksysguard, when that said insufficient permissions I closed it
and fired it up again with root permissions with:

kdesu -u root -c ksysguard

This way I didn't get any messages about not having permissions
but the one process that was hanging up was still there...

I don't know of any reason why a root permission killall would work
better than a root permission ksysguard, But if it happens again I will
certainly try your suggestion.

Speak of the devil... I just tried to stop kscd from playing my Phil
Collins cd only to avoid the issue I tried the eject button instead of
stop... So here goes:

ARRRGHGH!

I suppose I should mention that I don't agree with the ubuntu sudo
policy and therefore have a real root login, and don't have ANY sudoers
thus the "su root -c" instead of sudo for the killall, and to be honest
the "kdesu -u root -c ksysguard" listed above was actually:
"su root -c kdesu -u root -c ksysguard" since the kubuntu version of
kdesu uses a sudo like password pop-up that doesn't accept the root
password. But su does, and passes it to kdesu which then doesn't ask.

Well anyway, thanks for the suggestion, it was worth a try!
