Ah, this is good information.  I had already downloaded the kernel 
source and I did the patch and it did update hub.c which means that the 
kernel has not yet been updated, as you say.

I've compiled kernels many times, but never done it the way I see shown 
on the ubuntu help wiki.  I tried doing it my way after installing what 
I thought was all the development stuff.  The directions state to look 
in a directory called 'debian' in the source code. I don't see it. Also, 
I don't see how to just grab the one module, usbcore, from the compiled 
modules rather than installing them all.  I assume the new usbcore would 
work without using the new kernel, since it is the same version of the 
kernel with a minor patch. If I had to compile the madwifi and all that, 
I definitely would forget it.

In short, I think I'll just wait for the new kernel which hopefully will 
have it fixed.  I don't sync all that often; so I can do without the hub.

I'm sure you are correct that the problem is mainly the hub, since I 
could sync consistently when not using it.  I'll just watch for the next 
kernel and check again then.  Thanks so much.
