Yes, indeed.  In fact, I haven't tried anything else except pilot-xfer.

Thanks for the help!  I really thought I had this down pat after setting 
it up in Debian...


No difference:

I copied and pasted the command into an xterm
~$ sudo pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -l

I then tapped the Hotsync button and waited a second (maybe two :))


    Listening to port: /dev/ttyUSB1

    Please press the HotSync button now...
