I just booted into Debian where I have this working and I get this when
I tap HotSync:

Aug 14 19:31:32 localhost kernel: visor 1-2.2:1.0: device disconnected
Aug 14 19:32:23 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.2: new full speed USB device
using address 4
Aug 14 19:32:23 localhost kernel: visor 1-2.2:1.0: Handspring Visor /
Palm OS converter detected
Aug 14 19:32:23 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS
converter now attached to ttyUSB0
Aug 14 19:32:23 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.2: Handspring Visor / Palm OS
converter now attached to ttyUSB1
Aug 14 19:32:24 localhost usb.agent[4457]: visor: already loaded

Then run my script which works:

#! /bin/bash
pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -u /home/ajlewis2/Documents/palm/.jpilot/

When it finishes, /var/log/messages shows:

Aug 14 19:33:39 localhost kernel: usb 1-2.2: USB disconnect, address 4
Aug 14 19:33:39 localhost kernel: visor ttyUSB0: Handspring Visor / Palm
OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
Aug 14 19:33:39 localhost kernel: visor ttyUSB1: Handspring Visor / Palm
OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1
Aug 14 19:33:39 localhost kernel: visor 1-2.2:1.0: device disconnected
-------------------------------
no mention of uchi here, although I know it gets loaded, because I did
lsmod and one line is:
usbcore               104292  6 visor,usbserial,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

Same in Ubuntu:
usbcore               130692  5 visor,usbserial,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd
