Virtual PC 7 (Mac OSX) and Ubuntu/Kubuntu

I use VPC7 on my G4 Macintoshes to "knock up" quick,
impressionistic demos for would-be Linux users (lovely for
DSL, BeatriX, Puppy and so on) but after extremely smooth
installs of both Ubuntu and Kubuntu 5 the screen resolution
goes all "Gooey" and as a result all is lost.

Bright ideas gratefully recieved.
