Jonathan, If "reinstalling the kcontrol .deb" means what I was recommended to do (which I seem to recall was sudo apt-get install --reinstall kcontrol) then it does not work for me and in fact has made things worse.
Before the reinstall I clicked Admin, put in my password and got thrown back to the origianl Control Center menu and stuck in a loop (see my earlier messages  and those from Derek Broughton on "How do I get into Admin..."). Since the reinstall I click Admin, get a red-bordered box with the single word loading.....and nothing more, it freezes.

Hope this helps with working out what is wrong.
