How do I get into Admin mode in Control Center?

But I can't carry out the instructions ("...open a terminal
window, log in via su, enter visudo...") because if I use
su it wants a password - and the only password I have set
is my user password and it won't accept that ("su:
Authentication failure"). And using sudo instead of su
doesn't get me in either. Catch 22!
