Well, despite the opinions of my Mac-loving friend, KDE and Gnome are _very_ 
different.  It's a subject people are always likely to take sides on - unless 
one of the desktops goes belly up.

Somewhat.  I have some concerns about the deviation from Debian - if kubuntu 
doesn't succeed, am I going to be left with a system I can only restore to 
Debian with great difficulty (or, do the unthinkable and move to Gnome!). So 
I both want to promote Debian over other Linuxes, and kubuntu over ubuntu.  
That said, I can't see kubuntu _ever_ being truly separate from Ubuntu, it's 
Ubuntu+.
