OK, thanks.  I see how to do this.

It seems like it may be the specific theme I was trying to set.  If I 
select a different theme, then it works as expected.

Odd, since the theme I was trying to use worked fine under a prior 
Slackware install on the same machine (KDE 3.3 or 3.2, I don't 
remember which).
