Installling non-k/ubuntu programs

Ugh! What is with this ubuntu urge to synaptic?  What's wrong with the 
perfectly good KDE kpackage?  imo, synaptic isn't even close to being as 
capable as kpackage.

(btw, it's kynaptic under kubuntu, and even if you're not using kubuntu, 
it's nicer not to advise people to be installing gnome apps here).

In what way does this actually result in non-kubuntu?  afaik, kubuntu is 
just ubuntu hoary with kubuntu-desktop.  kubuntu-desktop is just a 
(overly broad) metapackage for KDE.  It comes with every @#$%^ ttf font 
package under the sun, which is annoying for anyone who doesn't need 
Arabic, 3 kinds of Chinese, Malay and two kinds of Japanese (iirc).
