Upgrading from 14.04 to 14.10 Plasma 5 difficulties

Right, the user had already done the upgrade to 14.10. Perhaps I
should have spent more time making sure that was a happy upgrade, but
he had already gone partly through the steps to switch to Plasma 5.
When he finally was able to do the full-upgrade step, there were only
a few packages. So I'm relatively sure he had fully upgraded first. I
certainly did so, and used 14.10 for a few hours before doing the
upgrade to Plasma 5.

And I had to uninstall both lightdm *and* kdm to get things running.
As well as running nmcli to get any networking at all, including
wired. I got it going, but am dismayed that it is not any smoother now
than it was on day zero.
