You could always change the tone or pitch on the power cord sounds a
little.  That way they're similiar enough, but not exactly the same.
You get the benefits of the shorter length without the potential
confusion of the sound.

Combine that with the desaturating of the screen (as was suggested in
another posting), and I think the potential confusion would go away
quickly.  For login, you could always saturate the screen (if this is
possible), so they would know the difference between login and plugin.
