The login sound is necessary, at least for many low-end computers.
I've got a Pentium 4 519J (2.933GHz) with 1G mem and SATAII WD HD,
after boot it took me only 10 seconds to see the kdm login screen,
when I typed my user/pass, I've wait another 20 seconds to hear the
login sound!

Sounds pretty like Windows uh? after I see the desktop I cannot do
anything but wait for the login sound, in order that the desktop
become "really" responsible.

Please note that, though my Pentium 4 2.933GHz is fairly old, it is
much faster than the cpu in current Atom Netbooks.

I do think it is better to just desaturate the desktop, because with
the logout sound it takes longer to shutdown a computer.
