You have incomplete installation. I just installed Kubuntu, to check these
errors. When inserted, DVD shows in media:/, when attached, USB disc shows in
media:/ (it even reads LABEL right). dbus/hal/udev combinations has numerus
addvantages over subfs. For example, you are able to create devices that will
automount on insert, or not. You can create crypto devices that will ask you for
a password on insert, you are able to name every device individually (this stick
will be /dev/stick1, this stick would be
/dev/somet-other-stick-just-to-impress-friends-1). It enables you to put
different scenarios for different medias (on insert, you can define to play DVD
in xine, on blank CD you could setup to run k3b, etc, etc, etc...). This and
other advantages are why allmost every other distro is switching to
udev/hal/dbus. Even SuSE will drop it's very bad subfs (which is able to crash
your system in some situations). And, subfs isn't kernel-only implementation. It
does have kernel module, but it has user tool too, and, in the end, it isn't
powerfull like udev/dbus/hal is. Ejecting CD on a CD button depends on
userdaemon that you use. If you use gnome-volume-manager, then you will not be
able to do this. If you use kio_media then you will be able to do this. If you
use ivman... Well, I guess you know what you are doing if you use ivman.

To put and end on this post - KDE 3.4 uses kio_media (which uses hal/dbus/udev).
>From README:

The media kioslave, new in KDE 3.4, supports the automatic mounting of
removable devies, such as CD-ROM and DVD drives, USB pen drives, digital
cameras, and many other types of equipment.

While some functionality is available without the use of HAL, media works
best with HAL (and therefore udev), in combination with pmount. Media
also extends the functionality of many other kioslaves. Check which
packages are recommended by the kdebase-kio-plugins package, and install
accordingly.

If you don't have kio_media, then you didn't install kubuntu-desktop. Install
kdebase-kio-plugins and everything would be like to expect it to be.

Leaving UNCONFIRMED, cause you didn't have running dbus, so no automounting
could be done and it apears that you don't have kio_media, wich is needed for
automounting on KDE. If you get all this programs and still don't have
automount, then please check your KDE settings. kio_media has some usability
bugs, but those aren't related to autmounting.
