This is not runtime configurable as claimed.
/sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/beep_mode is read-only (mode 444);
the parameter can only be set at module load time.

(And did we really need to throw up _another_ roadblock for people who
actually want a system beep, when there are already a half-dozen other
things that need to be reconfigured or even recompiled before the
speaker will emit so much as a whimper?  See bug 486154.)
