I forgot that I had manually loaded the ppdev module (modprobe ppdev). The last entries in my previous posting (ppdev0) are generated by this module.

Any way, when I try to add a printer through 'System->Administration->Printing->Add Printer' there is no printer detected and no ports available to specify (I suppose this could be a problem in cups).
