I'm seeing something similar to this on an AMD64 system with 2.6.15-21. This worked fine with hoary, but with dapper when I try and print to the printer, it spews out pages of gobbledegook (the first time it was actually a random line from dmesg!). Dmesg shows a bit of " lp0: ECP mode" as reported above, as well as some repetitions of:
[ 362.650551] DMA write timed out
[ 401.750282] parport0: FIFO is stuck
[ 401.791371] parport0: PE,1 timeout (1) in ecp_write_block_pio
