Strike that. I don't think dri was actually active, as the video wasn't
hardware accelerated. I was missing the linux-restricted-modules-...
package, so the ATi drivers weren't working properly. After installing
this package, hardware acceleration works, but sleep does not. So I
would say that it is truly a dri problem.
