It is the master on the second IDE channel [IDE 1,0]

There are also two hdd's on IDE 0 and a third hdd, running as slave on the same channel as the NEC DVD RW ND3550A.

Sorry, I don't know how to get a screenshot of the POST echo. Most of it goes by so fast I can hardly read it.

I have the device when I boot Win2000, Mepis 3.4.3, Xandros 2.03 and Breezy. I'm not sure about Free BSD --I'm still playing around with getting that fully installed& running in my spare time. However, all of those OS's --and Dapper, too-- originally installed via a disk in the NEC DVD RW ND3550A device.

I see in the /var/log/dmesg where we have a problem, but I don't know what the problem is or why it's occurring. see line:

[4294708.293000] ide1: Wait for the ready failed before probe!

The next line has hdd: ST3200822A being recognized. This is the slave on the ide1 channel.

I'll attach the /var/log/dmesg file as a separate entry, since I need to switch to the machine where I have dapper installed [see below.]
