Bug description:
  I was using the installation CD which I already used successfully for
  a previous installation Ubuntu 11.10, a CD created in  oct 2011; I had
  to reconfigure my computer; I could re-use the existing 10.04 version,
  until now, but could not re-start the 11.10 one; I tried to re-install
  it : this bug showed up while this re-install was in progress
