I agree about that, but the reason I have is just to put some shortcuts to
the application on the desktop,
You know that switching from the (unorganized) windows start menu to
the (organized) gnome/kde menu is some times a little hard.
And tiny things like the app icon may prevent the user from "finding"
word, even more if the desktop is full of files, they may call you to ask
where is word when they have a shortcut to OOwriter named "word" on
the desktop...
