GAP

When I tried to install the software package GAP on ubunti 6.06 as described 
on http://www-gap.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/Download/UNIXInst.html, I got an error 
message as I typed the command: ./configure. It said that no C-compiler was 
found in $PATH. I downloaded the installation-CD for ubuntu from the 
website.
How can I solve this problem?
