install screen resolution too low - how to adjust?

I've just installed edubuntu 6.10 on an old PII 266 laptop (Toshiba
Tecra).  It doesn't seem to recognize the native resolution of my LCD
(1024x768), and installed with a default resolution of 640x480(!).  I
have looked all over, but can't for the life of me figure out how to
reset it to the highest resolution. Yes, I found the system control
program which supposedly performs this function, but it doesn't offer me
any choice other than 640x480.

Any help much appreciated.
