install screen resolution too low - how to adjust?

From a terminal type:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg <Enter>
(enter your password <Enter>)
Press <Enter> about 15~20 times until you see the 'Advanced' choice. In
the next window we can specify a Horizontal refresh rate and the
Vertical sync rate.
The first one could be 50~75.
The second could be 60~120
these settings will vary depending on your monitor and it is remotely
possible to fry your monitor if the settings are too high
Keep pressing enter until your command prompt returns and exit out of
the Terminal screen.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the X session and after you login,
you will be able to set a higher resolution (maybe)...
