install screen resolution too low - how to adjust?

you can reconfigue your graphique server with:

Ctrl + Alt + F1 for terminal and use

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org

use the auto mode for détecte vidéo card and monitor
and for the résolution/vidéo mode select 1024x768, 800x600
and 640x480. Save config and reboot your xserve with command
Ctrl + Alt + Backspace
