install gstreamer0.8-plugins to play mp3

Also make sure xmms is using the esd audio output, use options - preferences 
- audio output, and select esd. I found xmms crashes with the wrong
  output selected there.

MP3 is not free software friendly, so perhaps look at mp32ogg to convert
to OGG.

Google for the "unofficial ubuntu guide", and read that for more info.
