Aha, I didn't think of that :-)

Issue duly posted:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tdb/+bug/531210

Definitely. I get this with Gant and GPars -- generalized wish
statements are useless, things have to be made sufficiently concrete
that some metrication is possible.

Hopefully my issue has made a start at making my wish statements more
concrete. I think what I need now is instruction on what
experimentation would be useful to those who have the ability to fix
something, either in TDB or in Linux.

I haven't looked at the code, and I guess the issue isn't a point of
pain for Jelmer. Speculating: using mmap may initially have been
introduced as an optimization, but I think it is now core to the way TDB
works. For local discs, and I guess over Samba -- and indeed NFS where
only Solaris is involved -- everything is fine. The issue seems only to
affect NFS mounted filestore on Linux. Personally I am surprised this
issue hasn't affected more people and become a point of pain for Linux.
I guess people just do the workaround of not using mmap except for
obviously local files so NFS is never a factor.

Anyway, this isn't really a Bazaar issue any more, so I guess this
thread should come to its natural end.

Thanks for prompting me to do the right thing Launchpad-wise.
