Is the MIME type getting set correctly in the attachment header?  The
correct MIME type is “text/x-diff” unless I'm mistaken.  Your email
client should treat this as a text file for the purposes of viewing or
opening it.

IMO saving diffs as “.txt” files is not a great thing.
