[xubuntu-users] 21.04: One wallpaper for all screens / displays?

Folks;
using Xubuntu 21.04 on a laptop that, then and now, is connected to a
dock with an external monitor, I am a bit lost when it comes to
Xubuntu/XFCE wallpaper management.
Expectations would be: I set up one wallpaper in XFCE and choose "apply
to all displays" and, well, the wallpaper gets applied to all displays I
use.
What actually happens: The wallpaper I set seems to depend upon the
display configuration that is currently active. It seems to make a
difference whether I do have "just" the laptop display working, "only"
the external monitor connected or a setup that spans both screens. All
along with this, behaviour in login / lock screen at times feels random
in displaying either one of my pre-set wallpapers or the default Xubuntu
21.04 login screen backdrop.
Is there any (default) way to make sure the same wallpaper is used
regardless of which screen is connected or which monitor setup is used?
Thanks in advance and best regards,
Kristian
