Matroska is a container, the video could be in almost any format. That 
is probably the problem - the video may be in a format that you don't 
have codecs for.

1) from a terminal, run mediainfo and look for the video codec used for 
the video. You can also find this from vlc "Tools => Codecs".

2) you can also try running mpv from the command line and see what it 
says - is it able to play the video? does it complain (in the terminal) 
about not being able to play the video stream, or missing streams, or 
something else?

Basically, we need to find out what sort of video is in the matroska 
container, so we can figure out next steps.
