hplip is a shell script. It does a lot of checking, installs any missing 
dependencies, and ends up installing all the HP tools and configuring 
whatever printers it finds. It's pretty good, but it does depend on the 
Linux distributions remaining reasonably stable so occasionally there 
are dependencies that the Linux distro cannot satisfy because they've 
been removed for other reasons.
