Sounds like a bug that will probably be fixed soon. I'd just do manual choosing for a couple of days, hoping the next update will fix it.

Subject: [xubuntu-users] Removing failed header update
Hi there
After a header update to 4.4.0-165.193, my PC now hangs on booting with a
kernel panic and says it can't mount the hard-drive.
I force a restart and the PC allows me to go to Advanced Options and select
the previous header, 4.4.0-164.192 and it boots fine and works all day no
problems (I'm writing this email on it).
Am I okay to remove the two entries 4.4.0-165 and 4.4.0-165-generic in
Synaptic?
So the PC will then just automatically use 4.4.0-164.192?
And in Synaptic, is it just 'Mark for Removal' or 'Mark for Complete
Removal'?
Many thanks
Dave
