Sorry, I am just seeing this message today.

Always check out help documentation first to see the relevant app or
setting manager. Here is a link to the media section for 18.04:

https://docs.xubuntu.org/1804/user/C/guide-default-apps.html#default-media

Also, you do NOT indicate which version of Xubuntu you are using. Nor
have you indicated any info about your hardware setup. The terminal
command inxi can provide that info. For example, on my desktop:

$ inxi -A
Audio: Card-1 NVIDIA GF108 High Def. Audio Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel
Card-2 Intel 82801JD/DO (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller
           driver: snd_hda_intel
           Card-3 Chicony driver: USB Audio
Card-4 Griffin iMic driver: USB Audio
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.15.0-70-generic

This command would show what hardware you have and if a driver is missing.

For sound management, you need to use PulseAudio Volume Control
(terminal command is pavucontrol). Alsa is run through PulseAudio since
many versions of Xubuntu ago.

What does PulseAudio Volume Control say under the Configuration tab?
Attached is a pic of what mine on my desktop looks like (I have built-in
audio turned off and sound output routed through a USB device called
iMic connected to my speakers).

I have attached screenshots of what alsamixer shows for HDA-intel and
iMic on my desktop. As you see, playback info is shown for both even
through HDA-intel is turned off via PulseAudio. In other words,
alsamixer is a deadend for managing sound.

It appears that playback for Intel HDMI is turned off for you. Use
PulseAudio and inxi plus some web searching to figure out why.
