[xubuntu-users] From 16.04 to 18.04

To Karel and Fritz (further down)

Dear Karel,

just bad luck.

It happened to me once as well when upgrading from 16:04 to 18:04.
I had two identical systems. On one it worked flawless, on the other it
didn't.

On all the other occasions (20+) no issues.

Once in while I do a clean install instead of an upgrade.
(preparing a list of repos and installed software incl. snaps and appimages)

Here is non-exhaustive list why:
- because I can
- it's faster to install
   but all software needs re-installing
- I want to reconfigure the system
- change of software packaging (switching between: default repo /
external repo / snap / appimage)
- if I want the new system to use the new default 'setup paradigms'
- ...

Important ( I almost forgot):

There are no user data on any of the systems I maintain.
Local data (including email) are always stored externally (USB3 devices).
So I do not have to worry about maintaining any user data.

Regards,

Klaus

Dear Fritz,

it is perfectly fine that you like Windows and that it receives so much
support from hardware vendors.

But this is a list for Xubuntu.

Quite possible that there is hardware, like in your case, that does work
on Windows and not on Xubuntu.

Just to be clear about it:

The hardware support of whatever device in Windows does not come from
Microsoft.
The drivers are developed by the hardware suppliers and, when becoming
popular enough, are bundled into Windows.

So the first address to complain about lacking hardware support in
Xubuntu (or any non-Windows OS) is the hardware supplier.

Ask them why they don't care about your needs enough to write drivers
for the OS's you are using.

Even if the hardware you picked up explicitly states that it works on
Linux and it doesn't, then you still need to complain to the hardware
supplier.
Their responsibility.
Have them write the drivers.
If the quality is any good, the likelihood for the driver being bundled
is high.

If you do not like how Linux works then why are you using it?

If you want to work the Windows way, stay with Windows. No better
Windows than Windows.
Or try Apple.

Start with checking whether your XYX-thingy explicitly claims to work on
Linux (Linux-distros).
As opposed to you wanting it or demanding for it to work on Linux.

If it doesn't you may just be out of luck.

Just because you can plug something into your system doesn't mean it is
prepared to talk to it properly or provide it with the information on
how to wield its features.

Regards,

Klaus
