With Thunderbird I have NOT had to use insecure apps with my gmail 
accounts.  After I enter my normal password, tbird takes me to gmail 
where I log in and OK that tbird can access my mail.


Geary at least requires a gmail generated password; I don't recall if 
evolution does.
