of course you *can* do that. Here's a guide for Debian based systems: http://users.digitalkingdom.org/~rlpowell/hobbies/debian_arch_up/index.html

But - and that's a huge 'but'! - you should ask yourself if it's worth the time, headache and hassle when a simple reinstall is doable much easier.
