Hi all,

I'm upgrading my desktop to a Lenovo ThinkCentre m58-7373 (4 gig RAM, 3
Mhz Dual Core 2, with SSD and Nvidia graphics card added). Running
16.04.1 right now.

I'm having two problems, probably both related:

- Fans run full speed. Tried sensors-detect, which came up with little
more than Core Temp, which I then manually added to the appropriate
file. No change in behavior. But, when I boot from the latest kernel but
in recovery mode, the fans run at normal pace and the computer is nearly

- Shutdown, restart, and suspend/sleep are broken. Shutdown and restart
run their paces but do not finish through the last step, i.e., powering
down or triggering a reboot. Suspend just hangs the computer. And, this
problem exists even if I never log in (that is, I turn on the computer,
normal boot, and then at the login screen click on shutdown, restart, or

When I initially installed 16.04 xubuntu, shutdown, restart, and
suspend/sleep worked without a hitch. So, I probably mucked something up
when trying to get the fan speed under control. But, I cannot figure out
what I did via searches for a changed file when I was "mucking" around
or a look through log files in /var/log/.

So, how I can get the power management features restored to original

And, how can I get the fans to behave without doing a boot in recovery
mode? And, for a philosophical discussion, what is different in xubuntu
between a normal boot and a recovery mode boot?
