Thanks. Before I tried that I thought to see if it would shut down after 
waiting for a while. I did not time it but I left it with the circle 
going round and carried on doing something else. When I looked back it 
had closed down properly.

So it is not refusing to shut down, it is just taking longer than it 
should. Something must be causing this delay.
