PS:

Note, I made a minimalist install, of 15.10 and upgraded to 16.04, no
Xfce at all. I never experienced a lightdm-gtk-greeter issue.

Comment everything out in

  /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf

and move away everything in

  /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.d/
