[xubuntu-users] USB camera being intercepted?

Are you using a laptop? If so, check to see If it has a slot to plug-in your SD card and download pics directly therefore. You can also get an SD card reader that plugs into a USB port. I prefer that approach. Pics are probably in a folder named DCIM. My reader is from Kingston.
