[xubuntu-users] 14.04 stopped working

Try going to ctrl+alt+f1

login

sudo apt-get autoclean

See if you've sufficient space. If not

sudo apt-get clean

Those will clean old packages from the apt cache or clean all packages 
from the cache.

I've seen the gui with nothing there with a completely full /
