Thanks everyone! I am trying all these options and slowly learning. Under gnome burning an ISO is easy but works for some distris and mot others. Will this be the same in xubuntu? Are there different settings/syntax for hybrid vs non-hybrid isos? What about bad, some of which ask for .img file for USB, but .iso for DVD? Thx.

dd if=your_file.iso of=/dev/your_usb -bs=4M
-bs for faster writing
