Interesting.  

I have a similar problem involving kalarm, mythtv, and the screen saver.  

Kalarm seems to own a rectangle in the middle of my screen which might, 
or might not, get updated by other applications.  I'm using xfwm4 on 
precise pangolin.  Hopefully the problem will just go away when I get 
around to upgrading to Trusty.
