[xubuntu-users] 14.04 How to disable Software Updates applet, revert to simply displaying an icon

Greetings,
Xubuntu 14.04 appears to once again prefer to launch the Software Updates applet and not display an icon in the top panel that "updates are ready" which causes me to turn to Synaptic to actually
install those updates.
I did so just now, leaving the Software Updates applet open/minimized, applied said ready updates with Synaptic, and then had to manually restore and exit from the Software Updates window as that did
not realize that Synaptic performed the update already.
Used to be in 12.04 that the orange "updates are ready" icon would disappear realizing that Synaptic had performed what it was notifying about.
Suggestions how to again revert to such operational functionality?
I am thankful,
